GUWAHATI: Suspected Ulfa militants fired two-inch mortar bombs on Sunday night, barely missing the airmen dining in the mess at the Borjhar Indian Air Force station.
The bombs were fired around 7.45 when some airmen were having dinner. The bomb landed in the corridor, damaging the roof and window panes of nearby rooms but there was no injury to the airmen in the mess.
Senior district officials said the IAF had sealed off the area and no one was being allowed to enter the security zone.
It has also launched combing operations in the nearby villages under Azara police station of Kamrup district.
This is the fourth mortar attack in the city and outskirts. Earlier, Ulfa militants had fired such mortar bombs in Dispur Capital complex and two mortar bombs were fired in the Railway Colony area and Ambari area near the AGP headquarters. In the Railway Colony attack two persons, including a child, were killed.
Ulfa Modho Mandal incharge Govind Baishya said the attack was a warning to the state and Centre and security agencies and not directed against the common man. Security forces are on high alert as more such attacks could not be ruled out.
